Inflammatory Markers: What We Test For and Why

To gain a clear understanding of your current inflammatory responses, we use a combination of cardiovascular risk markers and nutritional lipid markers that are indirectly related to inflammation. Inflammatory markers are measurable signals that indicate how well the body’s immune and repair systems are functioning. As part of the Apeiron Life assessment, these markers are analyzed through a blood draw to identify systemic inflammation, cardiovascular risk, oxidative stress, general stress, and nutritional factors that may affect long-term health.


Research indicates that persistent low-grade inflammation is linked to conditions such as heart disease, metabolic dysfunction, cognitive decline, and aspects of accelerated aging.


The markers assessed include:


  • hs-CRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein): In response to inflammation from a variety of stressors such as smoking, autoimmune disease, infection, or tissue injury, the liver produces CRP. hs-CRP is a sensitive marker of low-grade systemic inflammation.

    • <1.0 mg/L is generally considered optimal.

    • Higher CRP levels are associated with increased cardiovascular risk, and persistently elevated levels can contribute to a greater risk of atherosclerosis and other chronic health concerns.

  • Oxidized LDL (Low-density lipoprotein): LDL cholesterol can become oxidized when exposed to oxidative stress. Oxidized LDL is more likely to contribute to plaque formation in the artery walls and is therefore relevant to cardiovascular risk.

    • Lower levels are generally preferred, though interpretation depends on the full lipid and inflammatory picture.

    • This marker is especially relevant in discussions of cholesterol quality, arterial health, and oxidative stress.

  • Lp-PLA2 Activity: Lp-PLA2 is an enzyme associated with vascular inflammation and plaque instability. It provides additional context for cardiovascular risk, particularly when paired with other markers of inflammation and lipid metabolism.

    • Lower values are generally more optimal.

    • Elevated levels may suggest increased inflammatory activity in the blood vessel wall.

  • Omega-3 Total: This evaluates overall omega-3 fatty acid status and helps contextualize inflammatory balance and nutritional status. Omega-3 status is often discussed in relation to cardiovascular health, recovery, and long-term inflammatory regulation.

    • Higher levels are generally more optimal.

    • This marker can be linked to dietary patterns, supplementation, and broader metabolic health.

  • DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid): DHA is an omega-3 fatty acid important for brain, eye, and cellular health. It plays a key structural role in cell membranes and is often discussed in relation to cognitive function and overall wellness.

    • Higher levels are generally more optimal within a balanced fatty acid profile.

    • It is especially relevant when discussing omega-3 intake and long-term health support.

  • DPA (Docosapentaenoic Acid): DPA is an omega-3 fatty acid that is less commonly discussed than EPA and DHA, but it remains useful as part of a broader fatty acid profile. It helps provide a fuller picture of omega-3 status and fatty acid balance.

    • Interpretation is most useful in context with EPA, DHA, and total omega-3 levels.

    • It is generally considered alongside other omega-3 markers rather than on its own.

  • EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid): EPA is an omega-3 fatty acid associated with cardiovascular support and healthy inflammatory balance. It is often discussed in relation to triglyceride metabolism, inflammatory regulation, and heart health.

    • Higher levels are generally more favorable.

    • EPA is one of the most important markers when considering omega-3 sufficiency and dietary support.
