Our CEO's Game-Changing Product: A Review of Cooling Mattresses

Today, our CEO, Geoff Yang, is here to talk to you about what he feels is the number one game-changer to sleep.

You already know that sleep is one of our foundational pillars to improving your health. A depth of research shows the health benefits, from improving cognitive function to building muscle mass. And there are many factors we can alter to improve your sleep practices.

Healthy sleep patterns are critical for health including but not limited to:

  • Enhances Cognitive and Emotional Function

    • Sleep optimizes brain function, improving memory, focus, and emotional regulation to support overall mental health.

  • Strengthens Immune Defense

    • Adequate sleep boosts immune activity, aiding in the prevention of infections and faster recovery from illness.

  • Reduces Risk of Chronic Diseases

    • Consistent sleep supports cardiovascular health and helps regulate processes that reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic illnesses.

  • Improves Social Interactions

    • Well-rested individuals exhibit better mood, patience, and empathy, contributing to healthier and more meaningful relationships.

  • Extends Lifespan and Healthspan

    • Sleep is linked to longevity and improved quality of life by reducing the risk of age-related diseases and maintaining overall physiological balance.

A cooler environment is ideal to optimize your sleep as it helps regulate your internal temperature. The core body temperature reaches its lowest point somewhere between the midpoint of nighttime sleep and several hours before waking. The sleep environment should be supportive of this. There are many tools – including cooling sleep toppers and mattresses – that you can consider to regulate your internal temperature.

I found that there is no greater hack to excellent sleep than these mattress cooling technologies. It has been the biggest game changer for improving my sleep, so much so that I give them as gifts as it's life-changing.

How does it feel?

It's that feeling in the heat of summer of climbing into cool, crisp sheets. Or in winter, when you climb under the comforter, and you're just ready to fall into a deep sleep.

So how do they work?

Well, you put a mattress cover that is connected to a device circulating cool water to lower the temperature of the bed.

Which brands do you use and have tried in the past?

The biggest brands out there right now are:

  • Chilipad by Sleepme - Cube Bed and Dock Pro Bed (i.e., new version of Ooler) systems

  • Eight Sleep - Pod Pro and Pod Pro Max systems

Are there any downsides?

Cost, maintenance, and noise are the things to think about.

The Chilipad systems are inexpensive, but the Cube is noisy. They also require maintenance, so descaling it, draining it, and placing new distilled water. You always have to have a jug of distilled water nearby.

The Dock Pro (Ooler) and Eight Sleep systems also have an app. It's nice to be able to control the unit so effortlessly through your phone.

So the more you spend, the colder and quieter it gets.

Another consideration you have to take into account is the form factor.

All the SleepMe items look like small VCR players, so they go by the foot of the bed or under the bed. I like this as you can hide it under a bench or the bed. But I have had issues with leaking and have sent several back.

Eight Sleep products seem to work the best and don't tend to leak. It's also quiet and easy to control. But it's the most expensive and the form factor I find tough. Because it's a tower that sits right next to the bed, and you can't hide it. I can't put it at the head of the bed as I want a nightstand to be able to drop my items on. But you also need power, so it can't be too far from a power source. It's just harder to place in the room.

Do you ever find it disrupts your sleep if you sleep without it?

Yes. If I have to sleep without it, I will turn the hotel room as cold as it will go. Into the low 60s. I can see my sleep go to hell in a handbasket.

How is the tracking technology?

As I have an Oura ring, I don't use the extra technology that the Eight Sleep offers. However, although I think Oura is best, other tech like Eight Sleep can assist as it focuses more on the sleep environment.

Which products do you recommend?

So, everywhere I own a bed, I have put a mattress cooling technology. And I've moved off the chili cube products as they're too noisy. I'm moving towards all Dock Pro Bed systems and replacing my older Ooler models. I've even designed benches at the end of my beds to put the technology under so it looks better.

But in places where it fits, I will put the Eight Sleep technology as it is a better product, but it has some form-fitting issues.

So the net of it is I recommend either the Sleep Me or Eight Sleep system, depending on what factors you're looking for in the model. But overall, I think these items are life-changing, and if you can afford them, it's crazy not to have one.
